LICENSING


Due to the massive budget deficits affecting all government systems, including the Medical Board, please anticipate the process to take many months (6-9 months) for applications to process. Below are a collection of tips to get the process going:

I got my CA license in July at the start of my 2nd year, and has not needed to bug people to co-sign my Rx since (major time saver!) So, here are some words of wisdom about getting your license on time...

1. Send in your paperwork to the state board sometime during the second half of your 1st year. You can even send it in before you take USMLE Step 3, because you end up reporting the USMLE result electronically anyway.

2. Send in your medical school paperwork at the same time you prepare for your state board paperwork. Best time for the medical school, I figured, is right after match and before graduation, i.e. late March to early May.

3. Lastly, Danielle sends the final paperwork to the state board from the residency once you successfully finish 1st year. You do not need to worry about this, because Danielle takes care of it.

4. Once you have your license, you can apply for DEA, and that process was pretty quick, if I remember correctlly. The hospital pays for the CA license and DEA, and you can use your CME money to pay for the USMLE Step 3. Other costs involved include photo, notary, sending the USMLE Step 3 result electronically, and anything that your medical school charges to process your paperwork.

If you have not started your medical licensing process, now is the time. Attached are applications for MDs and DOs. Please read through the forms carefully. There are some forms that you will need to send to your medical school for verification. There are also forms that the Residency Program will complete on your behalf (L3 & L4 forms for MDs, Post Graduate Training form for DOs).

Also, keep in mind that the Medical Board of California and the Osteopathic Medical Board of California have public sites where patients can access your licensing information. When completing the forms use the hospital address for your public address. Your home address should be used as your private address.

You will also need to be fingerprinted again. The Live Scan form is attached. The Contra Costa Sherrif's Office does livescan printing. You will need to contact them to make an appointment. They can be reached at (925) 957-7100. They are located at 500 Court Street 2nd Floor here in Martinez. There is a nominal fee for fingerprinting.

Some forms will also require a notary. There are several in the area (see below). Most notary services charge $10 per signature. While the County will not reimburse for Notary Services or Transcript fees, they will reimburse your Application Fees and Initial Licensing Fees. Be sure to make a copy of your check(s) and submit them with your Travel/Expense Demand. The reimbursement comes directly from the County and NOT from your Educ Funds.

RE-IMBURSEMENTS:
You can be reimbursed for the application & license fees only. The County will not reimburse for notary or other expenses related to licensing.
